Spend a Day Fishing for Scallops: A Great Activitity for Family Members of All Ages

Ah, the scallop. The mollusk of lore (the goddess Venus often is depicted standing on a scallop shell). So tasty steamed and rubbed with a mixture of ginger, garlic and oil!.

There’s no need to wait for a visit to your favorite seafood restaurant or make a trip to your neighborhood grocery store to get your fill of fresh scallops. Instead, why not fish for them yourself!

Here at Sunshine River Tours we offer you, your family and friends, a wonderful day on the water fishing for these tasty creatures.

In fact, “fishing” really isn’t the right word -- “harvesting” is a better term since you stand on and among sea grass in shallow inlets and pick the critters right up with your hands!

If traditional fishing isn’t for you -- you can’t tell a rod from a pole and you hate the waiting around for the fish to nibble -- scallop hunting may be right up your alley. For there’s not gear but your hands and there’s no waiting for the scallops to come to you, because you go to the scallops.

It’s also a great family activity. Imagine all of you standing waist deep in clear blue water, standing in sea grass, flicking scallops left and right into mesh bags, seeing who gets the most or who finds the biggest. Just try to forget a day spent scallop fishing!

And then, later that day, all of you can take your haul to our on-site Riverside Crabouse for preparing and cooking to your order.

Our Scallop Tours depart from the dock early -- 7:30 a.m. -- for all the more fishing time. You can bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks, or you can purchase from the marina. Don’t worry about keeping the scallops you catch cold; we provide ice chests.

Our boats can go up to 40 miles per hour (again, for all the more fishing time). The vessels have restrooms and have plenty of cover for when you wish to get out of the sun.

Do some of your party members prefer to snorkel rather than fish? That’s fine. You can scallop while they snorkel nearby, or vice versa. Or you can snorkel between forays for scallops -- the choice is entirely yours.

All we ask is that you bring sunscreen, towels, your bathing suit and a sense of adventure. We provide everything else -- even the required recreational saltwater fishing license!
