Manatee Tours > Homosassa Springs, Florida > Things to Do in Homosassa

As much as we know you’ll want to spend all your time with Florida’s manatees, you will want to get out and about when you visit Homosassa Springs.

Are you a baseball fan? Do you know your baseball lore? Than you’ll definitely want to check out the Ted Williams Museum. It’s about a 90-minute drive from Homosassa Springs, but well worth the drive. Where else will you be able to see the baseball Babe Ruth signed for Ted Williams? You’ll also be able to view to your heart’s content displays on Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Wade Boggs, George Brett and many more famous sluggers.

Since you’ve chosen to swim with manatees, we figure you’re a water lover. In that case, you really should rent a kayak for an afternoon or the whole day. There are several kayak rental companies in the Homosassa Springs area. And one or more offer guided day and even overnight trips. Paddling a kayak is a great way to view manatees above the waterline, as well as dolphins, eagles, otters and dozens of bird species.

Speaking of renting, why not rent a bicycle for the day – or for a week! The wonderful 47-mile Withlacoochee State Trail is great for bicycles. A former rail line, the trail is paved and wide enough for pedestrians and bicyclists. Another trail that’s definitely a “must-pedal” is the Fort Island Beach Trail. This trail will take you right to the beach through woods bursting with wildlife.

Is history – archaeology in particular – your hobby? Then a visit to the Crystal River State Archaeological Site is called for. It’s here that you’ll be able to see the remnants of the Deptford culture who lived here from 200 B.C. to 1400 A.D.

In fact, if ghost town exploration intrigues you, than the county in which Homosassa Springs sits will surely fit the bill for your ghost hunting. Citrus County has 14 ghost towns, most of which were once farming communities that were wiped out in the “big freeze” of 1894/95.

Speaking of the 1800s, the Homosassa Springs/Citrus County area is full of wonderful antique and collectibles shops. Check out some of the many flea markets that open on weekends. Or stop by and watch a bidding war at one of our auction houses. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you could even bid!

A must-see stop for the collectibles fan is Heritage Village in nearby Crystal River. Historic buildings have been converted into antique and collectible shops. You’ll also find gourmet food and home décor shops to fit every palate and budget.
